ENG 305
ENG 305
Monday, 2 March
This session on Uncle Tom’s Cabin, we continue to puzzle over Augustine St. Clare’s apathetic position on slavery and reckon the angelic figure of little Eva. We work through Ophelia’s continued encounters with slavery and reflect on the quest of George and Eliza to complete their escape. Through it all, we hope to draw out a richer understanding of the issues in play and how these tweak our understanding of the genre.
For Wednesday (3/4):
•Read Stowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Chapters XXIX – XXXIII (pages 291-363)
•Team #1 posts Think-Piece #3 on DB.
Wednesday, 4 March
As we move forward in our discussion of Uncle Tom’s Cabin, we discuss the developments of various characters as well as key moments in which Stowe is laying out her complicated anti-slavery program. We move from the placid scene in the St. Clare house and encounter darker days with Tom’s arrival at the degraded plantation of Simon Legree. We see a few remaining moments of subversion in Tom and the new character Cassy, but the chances of positive outcomes seem increasingly thin.
For Monday (3/9):
•Read Stowe, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Chapters XXXIX - XLV (pages 363-408)
•Team #1 posts Think-Piece #3 on DB.
