Exercise Program Phases
An exercise program is broken into phases. Each phase has its
particular traits and points of emphasis. From another point of view, each
phase possess potential benefits and dangers.
Initial Phase (Adaptation phase)
- This is affected by the factors listed above, age and initial
fitness level major factors of consideration.
- Very critical phase for inactive people.
- For inactive, increased danger of injury & negative effects of
exercise
Improvement Phase
- Substantial improvement of fitness components are made during this stage.
- This stage will vary in length depending individual fitness goals and
fitness levels, in addition to unexpected events (i.e., injuries, schedule
changes, sickness, etc.)
- Danger of injury if improper increases in intensity, duration, or
frequency occur.
Maintenance Phase
- This phase can and should last a lifetime.
- This phase and the associated level of fitness can be used as a
"spring-board" for the individual to pursue more vigorous activities
if their interests change.
- Lowest chance of injury. Body is usually well adapted.
